Jeddah - Arabstoday

Saudi students and their counterparts from other Gulf states are being asked to come up with ideas to raise awareness about the need to save water in the region. A competition is planned to find the best ideas and winners will head to the UK to see a polo match attended by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II. The competition is part of a water conservation campaign by the Saudi-based BMG Foundation. Entitled  “Our Water, Our Life,” the campaign hopes to encourage sustainable water consumption in Arab households. It also aims to draw Arab youth into raising awareness within their communities of the need to conserve water resources. The competition is looking for university students from the GCC to submit the most innovative, cost-efficient and creative awareness campaign to inspire households how to save water. The BMG Foundation says it will tour all GCC capitals and meet with university students, providing them with details of the competition. As well as the polo match, the winners will also be invited to attend a classical music concert. The foundation’s website — www.bmgfoundation.com — has a short documentary which, it says, presents “shocking” statistics regarding water scarcity in the Arab world. It also presents ways in which water can be saved. The announcement of the new competition follows fast on the heals of a related photographic contest entitled “Water in Arabia” organized by the foundation. Over 400 Saudi photographers submitted entries before the deadline of Nov. 22. Ten winners are to be announced at a gala dinner this Monday at the Jeddah Hilton. The event is part of the Saudi Water and Power Week, an annual gathering of the leading international companies in the water and power industry. The winning photos will be auctioned at the event, sponsored by Nestle Waters, Al Turki Group, Tamer Group, Saudi Research and Marketing Group, Veolia Water, Al Joman, AkarOne, BTL, BSF Capital, Evonik Industries, CPC and others.
