Turkey put 101 new power stations on line in 2014, the country's energy minister said Thursday.
"We put 101 electricity power stations on line in the first five months of this year. We put at least one power plant into service every two days," Taner Yildiz, told the Anadolu Agency.
In the first five months of 2013, Turkey added 1,264 megawatts of electricity to its total capacity, and this year the country added 2,197 megawatts, said Yildiz.
Turkey's total installed electricity capacity reached 66,134 megawatts with a 13 percent increase compared with the same period last year. The country now has 933 stations.
According to the ministry, 37 new hydropower stations and 29 wind farms started electricity production in 2014.
Thermal power plants are generating the most electricity this year with a production capacity of 1,067 megawatts. Hydropower stations are generating 783 megawatts, and wind farms generated 314 megawatts. Meanwhile 30 megawatts of biogas and geothermal plants were put online this year.
Electricity consumption and production rose in 2014 with production outweighing consumption. Although consumption increased by 5.1 percent year-on-year, the annual production rose 5.4 percent in 2014.
As a developing country, Turkey's electricity consumption is rising each year. The country is now attempting to increase its installed electricity capacity to 100,000 MW by 2023.
