Rabat - Arab Today

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Ahmad Ahmad has called on heads of football confederations in the continent to show tremendous support for Morocco’s bid to host the 2026 World Cup.

Ahmad said Africans must show “clear” and “massive’’ support for Morocco as it tries to become the second African country to host the biggest football event after South Africa in 2010.

CAF’s announcement of its support to Morocco’s bid came after the Kingdom officially submitted a formal application to host the international tournament on Friday, the deadline day set by the FIFA.

On its official website, CAF said that “Ahmad Ahmad, takes note of this decision and calls on all the African national associations to join their forces for a frank and massive support for this candidature”.

Ahmad revealed that presidents of six zonal unions have already pledged support for Morocco’s bid.

The bid for 2026 is going to be the fifth for Morocco, after 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010.

In 2010 South Africa beat Morocco to become first African country to host the world football event.

This time, Morocco will be facing the three North American giants, the United States and Canada and Mexico.  The three countries made a joint bid and were hoping they would go unchallenged.

Mexico already hosted the event in 1970 and 1986 while the US organized the 1994 edition.

FIFA will decide on the 2026 edition host in June next year on the eve of the World Cup in Russia.
