Serbia defeated Russia 4-1 in the first round of the Davis Cup at the Cair Sports Centre in the city of Nis, qualifying for the last eight of the top international tennis competition for men.

According to the live results on the Davis Cup website, the final day started with a 3-0 lead for Serbia, so Dusan Lajovic's 2-1 victory over Russian veteran Konstantin Kravchuk just added one more point to the already-sealed triumph.

Serbia forfeited its fifth match between Nenad Zimonjic and Danil Medvedev due to its certain victory.

Previously on Friday, Viktor Troicki won his match against Karen Kachanov 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6, while on Saturday Danil Medvedev gave up his match against Novak Djokovic in the fourth set at 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 1-0.

In the doubles action on Sunday, Nenad Zimonjic and Viktor Troicki of Serbia beat Russia's Kravchuk and Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.

Serbia won its only Davis Cup title in 2010, and is currently 8th in the world rankings while Russia, ranked 15th, came out on top of the competition twice - in 2006 and 2002.
