New York was struck by its worst attack since September 11, 2001 when a suspect with apparent links to the Islamic State group mowed down pedestrians and cyclists on a bike path on Lower's Manhattan's West Side, killing eight.

Here is a chronology of major attacks involving jihadist perpetrators on US soil.

- Florida club: 49 killed -

A heavily armed gunman opens fire inside a gay nightclub in the city of Orlando on June 12, 2016 and kills 49 people.

The attacker -- a US citizen of Afghan descent named Omar Mateen -- is killed in a shootout with police; during the assault he pledges allegiance to the Islamic State group, which later claims responsibility.

- California office party: 14 dead -

A radicalized Muslim couple -- US-born Syed Rizwan Farook and his Pakistani-born bride Tashfeen Malik -- storm a year-end office party at a social services center in San Bernardino on December 2, 2015 and gun down 14 people, wounding 22 others. They flee the scene, but are pursued by police and killed in a shootout later that day.

- Boston Marathon: three dead -

Two pressure-cooker bombs placed near the finish line of the Boston marathon in April 2013 kill three people and injure 264 others. Two brothers of Chechen descent, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are tracked down. Tamerlan is killed trying to escape while Dzhokhar is captured, convicted and sentenced to death. He is behind bars pending an appeal of his conviction.

- Fort Hood military base: 13 dead -

In November 2009, Nidal Hasan, a US Army psychiatrist turned Al-Qaeda supporter, opens fire at his military base in Killeen, Texas, killing 13 people and wounding 42, before being overpowered by police.

- 9/11 carnage -

Four passenger aircraft are hijacked on September 11, 2001, with two deliberately slamming into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and another into the Pentagon outside Washington. The fourth plane crashes in Pennsylvania. The attacks, claimed by Al-Qaeda, leave around 3,000 dead.
