Senior officials from the Roads and Transport Authority, RTA, and Dubai Police have met to discuss road safety strategies in preparation for Dubai hosting Expo 2020.

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, and Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, discussed the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy and future projects the RTA is set to undertake in support of Expo 2020.

According to Al Tayer, such efforts are already highlighted in improved traffic safety, smooth flow of traffic across the emirate, and enhanced safety of public transit means in the interest of citizens and residents of Dubai.

"Both parties share a wide range of roles and responsibilities that serve the strategic objectives and goals of the Dubai Government," explained Al Marri.

The meeting also reviewed the Traffic Safety Strategy charted by the RTA, which is aligned with the world’s best practices in countries like Sweden, UK, Australia and Canada, as well as the structure of teams and committees formed by the RTA to cater for Expo 2020 projects.

RTA plans include a portfolio of projects such as 'Route 2020' which will see the extension of the Red Line at Metro Dubai to the Expo site, and the upgrading of Al Yalyes Street and Airport Street. Projects also include the integrating of transport systems in Expo surroundings, procuring a new bus fleet, and constructing bus stations, as well as a Traffic Control Centre at Al Barsha.

The officials also discussed adding a representative from the Dubai Police to the Higher Committee of Roads and Transport. Discussions also covered providing training to Police personnel in the centre and providing security protection to control centres.
