The Ministry of Interior released a statement Friday denouncing the “allegations” raised in an article published by the Istiqlal Party (IP) that accused the “deep state” of murdering two politicians, saying that it has opened an investigation into the remarks.

The IP published an article on its official website on February 8, titled “What do they want from the Secretary General of the Istiqlal Party?”, that created immense controversy in Morocco, given the huge allegations it made.

The article, which was later deleted from the website, claimed that “entities” orchestrated the death of the two Moroccan politicians Ahmed Zaidi and Abdellah Baha, whose death in 2014 near the bridge of Oued Cherrat near Rabat was deemed tragic.

The article also anticipates that the Secretary-General of the IP Hamid Chabat may be these entities’ next target.

The ministry stated that the accusations  of an attempt to assassinate Chabat are “dangerous,” adding that the  article’s use of terms such as “deep state” and “controlling the political game”  is “obsolete.”

“While the Ministry of Interior denounces the content of this article that may open doors to malicious interpretations,” said the statement, “it confirms that it has sent a correspondence to the Minister of Justice in order to open investigations in this issue and prosecute the person or people behind the article as well as to enlighten the national public opinion about the all the circumstances surrounding this topic.”

The statement says that it rejects the “fabrication” of claims and allegations aiming to serve “mysterious political agendas” without giving proof.

“Every time this party official finds himself in a politically difficult situations, he begins his accusations instead of dealing with the problems at hand logically and democratically,” it adds.

The family of Ahmed Zaidi also released a statement on Thursday calling on Morocco’s Justice and Interior Ministries to open an investigation following the article published in the Istiklal Party’s official website, saying that the “allegations are shocking.”
