Abu Dhabi - Arab Today

The UAE and Russia have forged strong bonds over the years, and are considering elevating ties to a strategic partnership. On Thursday, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, was received warmly at the Kremlin by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two sides discussed ways to combat terrorism and also the Syrian and Libyan crises. The geopolitical situation in the Middle East and steps to promote peace were on top of the agenda during the high level meeting.

Sheikh Mohamed spoke of the importance of the relationship and said the two sides could cooperate in all sectors. Expansion of trade and business ties are vital, he said during the meeting which was also attended by Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

UAE-Russia economic ties have huge potential. Over 300 Russian companies operate in the UAE.

Sheikh Mohamed said the UAE is speaking to Russia on all regional and international issues and crises. Channels of communication are open, he said, and Moscow could play an effective and constructive role in bringing stability and peace in the Middle East when it is facing unprecedented challenges.  "UAE-Russia relations are deep-rooted and witnessing remarkable growth in all fields, thanks to the keenness of leaders of the two countries to develop them," he said.

Last year, the two countries commemorated 45 years of the relationship. President Putin said ties between the two countries are based on mutual respect and common interests.

In a joint statement at the end of the talks, the two sides said: "In accordance with the principles and objectives enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, and based on the ideals of peace, justice and equal rights, the two parties declared their intention to study a strategic partnership to further promote Russian-UAE relations .
