UAE reiterates support of US strategy on Iran at the UNGA
New York - Arab Today

The UAE has reiterated its support for the new US strategy towards Iranian policies that threaten global security and stability.

The UAE has called upon all countries facing questions related to their nuclear activities to fully comply with their international obligations and undertake the necessary procedures to address the international concerns relating to their activities.

The UAE made its official statement during the discussions of the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on Disarmament and International Security on articles concerning nuclear weapons.

The statement emphasised the UAE’s concerns regarding the sustained nuclear activities of Iran and the development of its missile programme and expressed hope that the implementation of the articles of the Iranian Nuclear Agreement and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, JCPOA, would be reflected in Iran's behaviour in the region. The implementation of this plan of action will require Iran's full commitment, as a critical element to start building trust and credibility about its nuclear activities, it added.

The statement confirmed the UAE’s support for the central role of the safeguards system and the International Atomic Energy Agency’s, IAEA, verification mechanisms to reduce the consequences of nuclear proliferation and promote regional and international security and peace.

The statement affirmed that the UAE was giving considerable attention to the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty, NPT, which was the basis for the prevention of proliferation of nuclear weapons. The statement noted that the full implementation of the articles of the treaty was a priority.

The UAE declared its constant commitment to support dialogue and consultations, as well as the efforts it was making to achieve progress in this regard, and urged the countries to undertake serious and decisive steps to implement the mechanisms and results of the 2010 NPT Review Conference and ensure that the delayed conference on the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East is held with the participation of all countries in the region.

The UAE's official statement addressed the stagnation in the Disarmament Conference in Geneva and called on the international community to take action to sign a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty as soon as possible.

The statement called on all countries to cease the testing of nuclear weapons and to comply with their international obligations, while expressing concerns over North Korea's development of nuclear and missile capacities. It strongly condemned the nuclear tests performed by North Korea, which it said would threaten the security of its neighbours, as well as international peace and security.
