A restraining order blocking the United States federal government from enforcing President Donald Trump’s controversial ban was upheld by a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in a unanimous vote on Thursday.

The decision will block Trump’s executive order temporarily suspending immigrant and non-immigrant visa travel from seven Muslim-majority countries causing a violent disorder at major U.S airports. The order also barred Syrian refugees from admission until further notice and temporarily suspended the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program for 120 days.

The restraining order, issued last Friday by Judge James Robart, prevented the federal government from enforcing vital parts of the executive order while legal proceedings continued.

During a press conference, Attorney General Bob Ferguson said, ”As a nation of laws, laws apply to everyone in the country including the president of U.S. This ruling is a complete victory for the state of Washington.”

In a statement released following the verdict, US Senator Bernie Sanders said, “This will restore some of the damage done to our country’s reputation around the world. It also may teach President Trump a lesson in American history and how our democracy is supposed to work here at home. A president who respected our traditions of religious freedom would not have resorted to hateful, anti-Islamic rhetoric to justify a ban on travel from seven mostly Muslim countries.

A president responsible for keeping our citizens safe would not hand over ideological ammunition to terrorists seeking new recruits to kill Americans. A president who respected the Constitution’s separation of powers would not have insulted a ‘so- called judge’ he disagreed with or tried to bully a federal appeals court with taunts on Twitter.”

This is said to be the highest-profile legal defeat yet over this controversial ban. Google and Apple had also filed brief supporting lawsuits against this immigration ban. 17 Attorneys General had filed an amicus brief in support of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s lawsuit against this immigration order on Wednesday terming it as an effort of protecting economy, save communities, and to uphold the rule of law.

An earlier verdict in support of the Trump administration enforcing its immigration and refugee order was restrained by a three judge panel in the Ninth Circuit Court.

The ban, announced in an executive order signed by Trump on January 27, triggered global uproar immediately following its release.
