Riyadh - Arab Today

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-general Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani has welcomed the outcome of the second expanded meeting of the Syrian opposition, held in Riyadh recently.

In a press statement, Al-Zayani lauded the sincere and strenuous efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to unify Syrian opposition groups ahead of the upcoming negotiations to end bloodletting in Syria and achieve aspirations of Syrian people after seven years of devastating war, according to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

The GCC chief urged the international community and the United Nations Security Council to shoulder their responsibility towards the Syrian people and to put an end to their sufferings as well as to protect the region from

the grave repercussions of the Syrian crisis on its security and stability.

The second expanded meeting of the Syrian opposition was held in Riyadh during the period November 22-24. It was attended by the UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura and 140 representatives of the different components of the Syrian opposition.

At the end of the meeting, the conferees elected Nasr Al-Hariri as a head of the opposition negotiating team and elected three deputies for him, KUNA reported.
