Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Education and Training Development Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa received in his office at Gudaibiya Palace today Education Minister Dr. Majid bin Ali Al Nuaimi and a number of officials from the Education Ministry who briefed him on the results of Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2016 issued by the International Education Association (IEA) yesterday. The results were also announced by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as these exams achieve one of the international organisation's goals of ensuring education for all.

Bahrain achieved distinguished results in its first participation with female students clinching the first place at the Arab level by scoring 468 points. Meanwhile, 21 public and private schools achieved an average exceeding the global one. In addition, 27 schools attained the required average, bringing the number of public and private schools which achieved positive results to 48.

The Deputy Premier lauded Bahrain's honourable results in the first participation in PIRLS 2016, describing them as a new accomplishment added to the kingdom's achievements in Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2015 when Bahrain obtained the highest progress average (45 points), clinched first place at the Arab level in science, second place in maths and first place in the numerical strategy test.

The accomplishments underline the ongoing development of Bahrain schools under the National Education and Training Development Project and the efforts made by the educational staff in Bahrain.

The Education Minister extended thanks to the leadership for the support accorded to the educational process. He also expressed appreciation and gratitude to the Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Education and Training Development Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa for his directives and support to the efforts of the Education Ministry.
