Cairo - MENA

The Environment Ministry urged on Wednesday Egyptians across the country to mark Earth Hour to shine a light on the need to take an action against climate change.

In a statement, the ministry said the switch off event starts at 8.30 pm on Saturday, March 25, till 9:30 pm in the planet’s biggest demonstration of support for action on climate change.

It was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide. Today, Earth Hour engages a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues. The one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now larger movements.

Egypt is the second Arab country after Dubai to mark the event.

The ministry will mark the event by flicking off lights for one hour at all tourist favorites like the Pyramids, Cairo Tower, Saladin Citadel, Bibliotheca Alexandrina as well as Luxor and Aswan Temples, clubs, universities and government buildings.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for the planet organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
