Egypt's State Council
Egypt - Arab today

The general assembly of Egypt's judiciary state council submitted to the presidency on Saturday its sole nomination of first deputy Yehia El-Dakrory for chairmanship of the council, state news agency MENA reported.

The general assembly gathered, meeting quorum, on Saturday to nominate three individuals for chairman among the oldest seven deputies on the judicial body, in compliance with the recently-approved judicial authority law. However, the members agreed to name Dakrory -- the eldest deputy -- as their only nominee.

El-Dakrory is known for his ruling in June 2016, as head of an administrative court, that voided a border demarcation agreement signed by the Egyptian government and Saudi Arabia last April to put the two Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir under Saudi sovereignty.<

The new judicial authority law, ratified by president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in late April, grants the president the right to choose the heads of Egypt's judicial bodies from three nominees proposed from within each body.

If those nominations are not submitted by deadline, or if fewer than three people are nominated, the president must choose the head of the council directly according to seniority.

On 29 April, the administrative prosecution body submitted the names of three nominees for chairman to the president.
