Abdullah al-Sharrah
New York - KUNA

Kuwait announced its full support for sustainable development plans in accordance with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, and creating international cooperation with the UN to achieve this matter.
The announcement came in a speech by the Third Secretary in the Permanent Kuwait Mission to the United Nations Abdullah Al-Sharrah, in a meeting of the Economic and Financial Committee of the UN's General Assembly on Thursday.
Al-Sharrah praised the efforts of the sustainable development team, noting the reports they presented on the needs and priorities of countries in the field of social, economic and environmental development, to fight poverty and execute the plans of the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development held in 2012.
Kuwait is considered as one of the developing countries with a high income, he said, however, the country has been providing other least developed countries with all kinds of financial aid since its independence in 1961, he also added. Kuwait is also committed to the rules of the UN's millennium goals, which state that all donor countries must provide 70 percent of their total income for the sake of sustainable development by the year 2015, said Al-Sharrah.
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) consist of eight international development goals that were established after the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000.
The goals include reducing the number of undernourished people, achieving universal primary education, creating gender equality, empowerment of women, lessening the rate of children's death, improving maternal health, fighting HIV, malaria and other diseases, providing environmental sustainability and creating an international partnership for development.
