A disappointing start to third-quarter earnings season battered US stocks on Tuesday and damped hopes for a rebound in corporate performance.

    The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 200.38 points, or 1.1%, to 18128.66. The S&P 500 lost 26.93, or 1.2%, 2136.73. The Nasdaq Composite fell 81.89, or 1.5%, to 5246.79.
