Tokyo stocks ended the morning session higher Wednesday after a 4.18-pecent stump in the previous trading day, following overnight gains in the U.S. market, as well as strong earnings by Toyota and Panasonic. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 52.73 points, or 0.38 percent, from Tuesday to 14,061.20. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 12.42 points, or 1.09 percent, at 1, 151.69. Gainers were led by automaker, insurance, mining and electronics issues, while decliners included oil and coal, utility, and shipping sectors.
