Tokyo shares opened higher on Friday on the yen's further depreciation and buoyant overnight gains in the U.S. market.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 137.48 points, or 0.86 percent, from Thursday to 16,205.05, its highest level on an intraday basis since Dec. 30 last year.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 5.70 points, or 0.43 percent, at 1,323. 61.
