Tokyo shares opened higher Monday as sentiment here was boosted by a stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs data for September that spurred a big gain in the U.S. market last Friday.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 123.29 points, or 0.78 percent, from Friday to 15,831.94.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 11.78 points, or 0.92 percent, to 1, 294.32.
