Tokyo shares opened higher on Friday, with the Nikkei index hitting a seven-year high, following the overnight U.S. market where the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 80.22 points, or 0.46 percent, from Thursday to 17,473.01, after briefly rising to 17,520.54, its highest on an intraday level since July 26, 2007.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 8.90 points, or 0.64 percent, to 1,398. 41.
