Tokyo shares ended higher on Friday on hopes for further monetary easing by the European Central Bank.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 87.90 points, or 0.52 percent, from Thursday at 16,880.38.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 7.32 points, or 0.54 percent, at 1,363. 67.
Gainers were led by utility, glass and ceramics, and machinery issues.
The turnover was about 2,476.0 billion yen (about 21.45 billion U.S. dollars).
