Hong Kong stocks fell 30.80 points, or 0.13 percent, to close at 23,190.72 points on Monday.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 22,960.08 to 23, 346.23. Turnover totaled 53.37 billion HK dollars (about 6.89 billion U.S. dollars), up from Friday's 48.28 billion HK dollars.
The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index rose 27.52 points, or 0. 27 percent, to close at 10,335.03.
Three of the four sub-indices lost ground, with the Utility sub- index losing the most by 0.4 percent, followed by the Finance at 0. 35 percent and the Properties at 0.3 percent. The Commerce & Industry sub-index went up 0.18 percent.
Banking giant HSBC, which accounts for the largest weighting of the Hang Seng Index, closed 0.57 percent lower at 78.60 HK dollars. Its local unit Hang Seng Bank fell 1.09 percent at 126.60 HK dollars. Bank of East Asia, another Hong Kong's major bank, was down 0.31 percent at 32.15 HK dollars. Local bourse operator HKEX rose 0.42 percent to 144.50 HK dollars.
Local developers Hang Lung Properties lost 0.62 percent at 23. 90 HK dollars. Henderson Land, Another major developer in Hong Kong, dropped 1.41 percent to 45.35 HK dollars. Cheung Kong Holding, a powerful HK-based developer controlled by billionaire Li Ka-shing, was down 0.36 percent to 137.50 HK dollars.
Mainland-based financial stocks closed mixed. Bank of China lowered 0.57 percent to 3.47 HK dollars. Bank of Communications was up 0.19 percent to 5.35 HK dollars. China Construction Bank grew 0.51 percent to 5.86 HK dollars. ICBC closed flat at 4.9 HK dollars.
As for energy stocks, PetroChina added 0.41 percent to 9.79 HK dollars. CNOOC advanced 0.43 percent to 13.92 HK dollars. Sinopec fell 0.54 percent to 7.39 HK dollars. (1 U.S. dollar equals 7.75 HK dollars)
