Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff says the new year should be better than the last one, though that's a very low target, according to AP.

Rousseff writes in Friday's Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that the economy for 2016 will be "better than current predictions." Market specialists have projected a 2 percent economic dip this year after a 3.5 percent plunge last year. She notes that slumping commodity prices have slammed Brazil.

A corruption scandal also has hurt investment. Rousseff says the probes are making institutions "more robust and protected," but also says they shouldn't paralyze the economy.

Rousseff also says that attempts to impeach her for alleged budget irregularities are "unfair" and suggests they stem from her tight re-election victory in 2014.
