Members of Zajel are professional singers, some are graduates of the Cairo Conservatory or the Music Education Faculty in Zamalek, while some have studied Arabic music. A number of them sing with A Cappella Choir operating under the Cairo Opera House. Earlier this year, Zajel released their song titled ‘Motamaredeen’ (‘Rebels’) uploaded to YouTube. The single aimed to support the anti-government ‘Rebel’ (tamarod) campaign with music. Earlier this year, Zajel performed in Limassol, Cyprus as part of the Crossroads 2013 (Singing the Bridges) Festival, along with a number of other choirs from countries including Estonia, Hungary and Lebanon, as well as the Cairo Conservatory Choir from Egypt.
