Gunmen attacked a checkpoint manned by the military police

An Egyptian police officer, four soldiers and four militants were killed Tuesday during clashes on Alexandria-Matrouh coastal road in Alamin, northern part of Egypt, official news agency MENA reported.
Shootings occurred when four militants attacked two separate security checkpoints on the road. The first attack resulted in the killing of a police officer and four soldiers. But the militants were killed when they opened fire on another security checkpoint on the same road.
A wave of militant attacks have been on the rise since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July of last year, with over 500 security personnel killed.
