A city leader of the Popular Committees - an armed resistance movement loyal to the government - was assassinated by gunmen thought to be linked to Al-Qaeda on Saturday.
The announcement, which was made in an obituary statement released by the Yemeni Presidency, said that Saleh Nasser, the leader in the southwestern city of Lahj, was killed, along with two of his aides, in a rocket attack.
Meanwhile, continuing clashes between Houthi rebels and tribespeople in the nearby Ibb Governorate have resulted in 16 deaths from both sides.
According to local sources, hordes of Houthi fighters are said to be flocking to the area in spite of signing an agreement that states they would be handing over control of the governorate to the tribesmen.
On the other hand, Al-Qaeda units carried out several attacks using suicide bombers in Radaa District of the central Al-Baydaa Governorate, resulting in the death of over 20 Houthi fighters.
The continuous attacks are also said to have led to the retreat of the Houthi fighters from the district they had seized the day before.
