A policeman was shot dead on Tuesday after a firefight with weapons dealers in a mountainous area in Sohag province.
In a statement, the Interior Ministry said that two weapons dealers were riding a motorbike when they opened fire on the troops.
One of the attackers was arrested with two machine guns in his possession.
The other man was killed by the troops after pursuit.
