The Iraqi Army stormed Tikrit on two axes and succeeded in regaining control over large parts of the city on Tuesday in a wide-scale military operation conducted with air force support.
A source at Salahiddin operations command center told KUNA army and anti-terror forces stormed the city from the south and the west amid violent confrontations with elements of the self-declared Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL), also known as Daa'esh, who are based there.
The source added security forces restored control over a municipal building in the heart of the city and regained sovereignty over Shishin district. The forces are also working on surrounding the vital Qadisiyah area of the city.
The operations were ongoing till time of filing this report, the source said, and are being conducted in coordination with the air force which bombed several ISIS targets since the early hours of this morning.
