US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns has extended his current mission to Egypt for an indefinite period to help resolve the conflict in the country, Egyptian news agency MENA reported Tuesday. This extension aims to allow Burns to conduct further talks with a number of Egyptian political figures and discuss “how they can calm tensions, avoid further violence and facilitate an inclusive democratic process,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters. Two Republican U.S. lawmakers, Senators John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, are in Egypt as well. They’ll meet with Burns while they are there.
