The head of Germany's domestic intelligence agency said attacks like the massacre at Istanbul airport could happen in Berlin or Munich in the near future, The Express reported.

Hans-Georg Maassen admitted he could not "rule out" such atrocities in Germany in yet another dire warning about the precarious state of security on the continent. 

Last week three suspected jihadi suicide bombers killed 44 people at Istanbul's main airport in what was the deadliest of a string of attacks in Turkey this year.

And there are fears that Germany could be especially vulnerable to future attacks after security chiefs warned more than 5,000 Islamist fanatics have taken advantage of the refugee crisis to sneak into Europe. 

Maassen told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper: "We can't rule out attacks like those in Istanbul also happening in our country." 

He also warned that Daesh could lash out at targets in Europe and America as it continues to lose ground in its Middle Eastern heartlands.
