Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

Russia is mulling a response to the recent statements by the Turkish president on Syria, the Russian newspaper Izvestia reported on Wednesday.

If the statements proved to be true, Russia may call for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting, the paper said.

During a symposium on the Middle East in Istanbul on Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that Turkey started its military operation in Syria to end the rule of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
