Minister: Islamic university in Almaty "beacon" for moderate Islam

Egyptian Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa described the Egyptian University of Islamic Culture in Almaty as a cultural beacon for propagating the moderate teachings of Islam and combating the extremism thought.

He made the remarks during a meeting of the university's board of trustees.

Egypt's Ambassador to Kazakhstan Haitham Kamel, President of the Egyptian University of Islamic Culture Gouda Basyouny as well as other Egyptian and Kazakh officials were present at the meeting. 

Speaking to MENA, Gomaa said he agreed with the Kazakh side to develop the Islamic university to continue its role in spreading the moderate teachings of Islam in Kazakhstan and central Asia as it serves as a model for cultural cooperation between Egypt and Kazakhstan.

He welcomed the Kazakh side's request to allow increasing the number of students accepted into the university from 1,000 to 2,000 students.
