Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs Nasser Judeh on Thursday met with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres to discuss the Syrian crisis and its humanitarian repercussions on countries neighbouring Syria, primarily Jordan, and means to deal with the issue of Syrian refugees. The two sides stressed their keenness to continue cooperation and coordination regarding the Syrian refugees in Jordan and provide services to them. Judeh reviewed the tremendous burden and pressure placed on Jordan as a result of hosting around 550,000 Syrian refugees and providing them with services despite the country’s limited resources. He expressed appreciation for the UN role in cooperating with Jordan and enabling it to continue providing humanitarian services towards the refugees, adding that the Kingdom was in need of more international support to enable it to better perform its humanitarian role. The UN commissioner highlighted the importance of Jordan’s humanitarian role regarding the issue of the Syrian refugees and called for further support to the Kingdom to help it serve them better.
