Italian vessels have helped rescue more than 2,000 illegal immigrants off the Libyan coast who were trying to reach Europe, the Italian coastguard said in a statement on Tuesday.

They were on board 14 rubber boats, the statement added. 

Other 600 illegal immigrants were rescued from two boats in the Maltese territorial waters, the statement noted.
