Italy rescues around 1,100 migrants in Mediterranean

Italian coastguard rescued about 1,100 illegal immigrants aboard boats in the Strait of Sicily on Sunday while trying to reach Europe.

An estimated 2,726 men, women and children have died over the same period while trying to reach Europe, often aboard small boats unsuitable for such trips.
