Baghdad - Arab Today
Iraqi Permanent Representative at the UN Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim submitted an official request to the current President of the UN Security Council (UNSC) Vitaly Churkin to hold an emergency session to discuss the Turkish Parliament’s decision to keep Turkish soldiers into Bashiqa district located near Mosul city in northern Iraq, Spokesman for Iraqi Foreign Ministry Ahmed Gamal said on Thursday.
The proposed request calls on the UNSC to bear its responsibility towards Iraq and take action against the Turkish violation of the Iraqi sovereignty, Gamal added.
Also, the Iraqi request called for stepping up international efforts to support Iraq in its fight against Daesh terrorists, especially with the imminent launch of the military operation to liberate Mosul city, Gamal noted.
Earlier, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al Abadi has warned of consequences that Turkey's irresponsible acts would turn into a regional standoff, calling on Ankara to stop interference in Iraq's internal affairs.
