Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif underlined that the US Congress is not in a position to allow military action against Syria.
“Only the UN Security Council, under special circumstances, can authorize a collective action, and that will be under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, and this issue needs the approval of the Security Council,” Zarif said.
The Iranian foreign minister underlined that the US President Barack Obama cannot interpret and change the international law based on his own wish.
“It would be wise that Obama take the several-day chance created for him to think twice about the issue, as warmongering is not in the interest of anyone,” Zarif added.
On Saturday, US President Barack Obama said that he has decided to launch a military strike against Syria for its alleged use of chemical weapons and seeks congressional consent for the move. US lawmakers will debate the issue upon returning from vacation on September 9.
