Iran promises not to force Afghan refugees for repatriation

The Iranian authorities have said they will not forcefully deport Afghan refugees from the country, promising that the government will pave the way for the registration of refugees.

The issue was shared during a meeting between the Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah and the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Khaama Press reported on Saturday.

According to a statement by the government of Afghanistan, the Iranian President has promised to step up efforts in a bid to register all the refugees based in Iran.

The statement further added that the two leaders also discussed expansion of bilateral cooperation in the field of economy.

Abdullah said the government of Afghanistan is expecting to start the operations of Chabahar port soon as the draft agreement for the port has been finalized by Afghanistan, Iran and India.

Afghanistan is expected to have sea-land access through the strategic Chabahar port in Iran by the end of next year as the work on the port has already begun by a joint venture of Kandla Port Trust (KPT) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).
