EU leaders Thursday dispatched messages of condolence and sympathy to Spain over the train accident that took place yesterday evening near Santiago de Compostela in north west of the country. \"Such a serious accident, with so many people dead and injured, is a tragedy for Spain and provokes such deep emotions. In these difficult circumstances I feel very close to all Spanish people,\" said European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in his message. \"Personally, and on behalf of the European Commission, I would like to send our most sincere condolences and express our solidarity and support to the families of the victims and those injured,\" he added. 78 people have been reported killed and over 140 injured in the worst train crash in Spain in several decades. On his part, European Parliament Martin Schulz stated \"On behalf of the European Parliament, I extend our most sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims, as well as to the Spanish authorities. We wish a full and speedy recovery to the injured.\"
