Egypt is seeking through its membership at the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) to draft African resolutions compliant with resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and resume the construction of the African peace and security structure, mainly the African force, the Foreign Ministry said.
In a report published on Africa Day, which falls on May 25, the ministry said Egypt is a member at both the PSC and the UNSC, meaning that it will serve as a bridge between Africa and the international organization regarding issues threatening peace and security in Africa.
Egypt’s vision at the PSC is based on a comprehensive perspective in dealing with the continent’s causes and challenges, such as cross-border crimes and terrorism, it said.
Egypt won a three-year seat at the PSC to represent the North Africa region during the elections held in January 2016 in Addis Ababa.
Africa Day is the annual commemoration on May 25, 1963 founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). On this day, leaders of 30 of the 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 1991, the OAU established the African Economic Community, and in 2002 the OAU established its own successor, the African Union.
