Coping up with the life developments in line with the Islamic Sharia is not "heresy," Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayeb said on Tuesday.

Tayyeb, who is visiting Jakarta, lashed out at those who ban everything, especially the new things.

"They deal with the linguistic meaning and do not deeply understand the terms," he said. 

"Islam has permitted to benefit from everything without violating the fundamentals of the religion," he added.
