Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Didier Reynders Tuesday said he noted with interest the Russian proposal currently being studied by the United States to the neutralization through diplomatic channels of the Syrian chemical arsenal. He underlined his support to the position of the UN chief that aims to quickly engage the Security Council in order to adopt a binding plan to impose on Syria to sign and ratify the Treaty of Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and to ensure fast and verifiable destruction of all the Syrian chemical weapons arsenal. A first step should be the delivery of a comprehensive inventory of the chemical arsenal available to Syria, noted Reynders. He, however, stressed that conditions on the ground will extremely complicate the implementation of such a program of disarmament. The Belgian official called on all parties to the conflict to cooperate closely with the international community to make it possible.
