Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul-Gheit

Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul-Gheit on Monday voiced surprise over "Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act," known as JASTA, which was passed by the United States Congress last week.

The law doesn't comply with the United Nations resolutions, international laws as well as principals of relations among countries, Abul-Gheit said.

Spokesman for the AL chief Mahmoud Afifi conveyed Aboul-Gheit's hopes that the US would halt such law that would likely result in creating tensions at the regional levels.

Under JASTA, families of victims of the September 11 attacks would be allowed to sue Saudi Arabia's government for damages.

Earlier in the day, the GCC said the law was "contrary to the foundations and principles of relations between states and the principle of sovereign immunity enjoyed by states" Yahoo news reported.
