US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Iraq’s capital Baghdad, in his first unannounced visit since taking office in January. A statement issued by the office of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has stated Kerry’s visit aimed at discussing regional developments, particularly regarding the Syrian conflict. “Iraq seeks to establish better relations with the United States and to activate a strategic framework agreement,” the statement said. Kerry and al-Maliki also discussed the possibility of a political solution in Syria.
