Secretary General of the National Democratic Party in Tunisia Shokri Belaid has confirmed that he received death threats from three Salafists on Monday. According to Belaid, he was threatened with death along with a torrent of verbal abuse at a cafe in Tunis where he was in meeting a number of his colleagues from the party. Belaid held both Interior Minister Ali Larayedh and head of the Islamic Renaissance Movement Rashid Ghannouchi responsible for his safety, accusing them of covering-up for extremist Salafist groups and militias. Shokri has had strained relationship with the Tunisian government since the rise of the Islamic Renaissance Movement. It accused him on many occasions of conspiring and mobilising people against it.
