Sources have told Arabstoday that Port Said Governor Ahmed Abdullah called on the Egyptian army to contain the current situation in the coastal city. A large number of demonstrators protested against an Egyptian court's decision to give the death penalty to 21 defendants in the Port Said stadium disaster case. The verdict is pending approval from Egypt's Grand Mufti. Sources said that military authorities may decide to impose a curfew, with clashes resulting in over 20 fatalities and dozens of injuries. Meanwhile, military general Ahmed Wasfy, leader of Egypt’s Second Army Field, said that they decided to push a number of military units to the streets in a bid to achieve stability and protect the public facilities. On Friday, a number of Third Army Field soldiers were deployed in Suez to contain the clashes that erupted between the demonstrators and security forces.
