Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta left the country on Tuesday for South Sudan to consult with President Salva Kiir on the peace process aimed at ending the current political conflict.

A statement issued in Nairobi said Kenyatta and his counterpart will discuss the progress of the implementation of the comprehensive peace agreement.

The two leaders are to hold a closed-door meeting and are scheduled to address a joint news conference later in South Sudan's capital of Juba.

South Sudan has been embroiled in a political conflict following heavy fighting between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and former Vice-President Riek Machar in July.

Kiir later sacked Machar and replaced him with former opposition chief negotiator Taban Deng Gai late last month.
