Serkadji prison in Algiers

The prison of Serkadji (former Barbarossa), located on the heights of Algiers, will soon be closed and converted into a museum once the prison Kolea of, currently under construction, will be delivered, a responsible source at the ministry of Justice said Sunday.
The construction works of the prison witness a "slight delay'' but they will be completed soon,'' Mokhtar Felioune, Director General of Prison Service and Social inclusion told APS.
In December of last year, Minister of Justice Tayeb Louh, announced that the prison, notorious for being the scene of colonial repression against the Algerian people during the Liberation War, will be closed and converted into ''museum of national memory.''
"Serkadji will be closed in two or three months,'' said the minister.
"This is a strategic objective, linked to the national memory and history of Algeria, which requires that public authorities make every effort to transform it into a museum in the shortest possible time," he added.
