President Obama proclaimed \"Education and Sharing Day U.S.A.\" Tuesday, praising contributions of those who \"equip our children with the tools for success.\" The White House proclamation, in honor of an observance held since Education Day was established in 1978 by a joint Congressional resolution, included mention of the importance of formal education and character, and praised the work of parents, caregivers, teachers and mentors. The annual observance honors Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of New York City (1902-1994), who opened urban education centers called \"Chabad Houses,\" and coincides with his birthday. The president mentioned Schneerson in this year\'s proclamation, saying \"he inspired millions to lift the cause of education, to practice kindness and generosity and to aspire to their highest ideals.\"
