THE INFINITI FX50 is among the sportiest mid-size luxury crossover vehicles available on the market. For the latest model year, the FX50 and its less powerful sibling, the FX35, have been given a light refresh that includes updated front-end styling and a new Limited Edition variant. Though the aggressive stance and muscular lines of the outgoing model remain, the latest FX50 features a more menacing chrome grille that takes inspiration from Infiniti’s Etherea Concept. The lower front fascia is also new and features chrome bands around the fog-light nacelles. In profile, the FX50 features a gently arching rear window design, short overhangs and chrome vents aft of the front wheels that visually underscore the crossover’s sporting intentions. The interior is largely unchanged, leaving intact the well-trimmed but slightly busy dashboard that incorporates a vertical center stack with sweeping side areas. Buttons abound thanks to the lack of an iDrive-style controller system. Materials are high quality, and space is ample for five adults. Cargo space, on the other hand, is somewhat compromised for the sake of style: the FX50’s short rear overhang and sloping rear window translate to just 24 cubic feet of trunk room, less than what is offered by some “compact” crossovers like the Honda CR-V. Fold down the rear seats, and storage space swells to a more useful 62 cubic feet. Engines Experience the unprecedented thrill of a 390-hp 5.0-liter V8 or the exhilarating 303-hp 3.5-liter V6. The V8 offers Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL) control to help the engine breathe freely for instant acceleration and enhanced efficiency. And both combine dual intake and exhaust for a sound that is uniquely Infiniti. Interior Every surface, every sight, is a reward. The cockpit is designed to create a sense of personal space while the available quilted leather-appointed seating and Maple interior accents invite your senses. The Around View Monitor uses four exterior cameras, one on every side, to give you a virtual 360-degree view of your surroundings, with enhanced 180-degree rearward view. This bird’s-eye perspective is displayed on your in-dash monitor to help you see all around your Infiniti. Safety Using the system’s laser range finder, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) helps alert the driver of a potential collision by providing a visual and audible warning. If the driver doesn’t respond, and a collision cannot be avoided, Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) automatically engages the brakes to help reduce collision speed and impact, helping to mitigate the consequences of the accident.
